Discover Saint-Malo
Welcome to Saint-Malo. From the docks, you’ll discover a fortified city reaching out into the sea, on the northern coast of Brittany, along the English Channel. The town centre is just a few minutes’ walk from the port, with shops, restaurants, markets and services all within easy reach. The sea is ever-present here — some of Europe’s largest tides shape daily life in the city. In fine weather, sandy beaches stretch out just beyond the old walls to the west. A perfect stopover to rest, resupply and take a walk ashore.
a bit of history!
Since the Middle Ages, Saint-Malo has evolved from a medieval fortress into an impregnable maritime stronghold. Its massive towers and thick walls paved the way for Vauban’s 17th-century bastion designs, while offshore island forts—such as Fort National—secured the port roads.
The city’s historical wealth is mirrored in its architecture. While most half-timbered houses were destroyed during WWII, the magnificent stone mansions of 17th-century shipowners (like the Hôtel d’Asfeld) remain as lasting symbols of the traders’ prosperity and the city’s grand legacy.
